Hypno Power and Shutdown Issues!

Hello – any chance someone can help? I’d be grateful.
I purchased an official Raspberry Pi adapter, but it doesn’t work. Purchased a new one and waiting for that to see if it works, but in the meantime, I’m trying to make do with what I have…
When using the USB-C to USB-A cable included with Hypno for power, and plugging into my Macbook via an adapter, my Hypno powers up and streams video after a few minutes of lag time. However, I have the Sleepy USB drive with sample videos, and when I plug it in, the Hypno stops working altogether…sometimes all I see is text on my screen, and other times it shuts off. I’ve tried at least three of the USB-A ports on the rear for this. Is the problem a power issue? Might it be a hardware fault?
Just to note, I’m connecting the HDMI cable first, as required…
Thank you -
Jim

Any chance someone could help with this?

The Hypno has 4 USB-A ports at the back and a USB-C at the side. The USB-C on the side is for power only. Any decent USB-C power adapter (or even USB-A power when using an adapter cable) supplying 5V via USB-C should work for powering it. The USB-A ports at the back are for three purposes only: (a) connecting USB storage (thumb drives) with videos or images, (b) connecting web cams, or (c) connecting MIDI devices. These are typically NOT hot-swappable - everything needs to be connected to the Hypno when powering it up to work properly in my experience.

I think the OP is having a similar issue to me. My Hypno keeps crashing when changing video. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong? Do I need to remove audio from the video? I’m using ‘Handbrake’ to format the files. Once the Hrpno crashes it keeps failing startup (crashes & starts again on a loop), until I remove the usb stick.

Further to my issues with video:
I had it working fine, until I used folders on the usb stick. I removed my videos, downloaded some of the Sleepy Circuits packs and dropped them on the drive. I was thinking that these would be formatted correctly for the Hypno. When I tried to navigate between folders I had the shutdown/crash issues. I then tried to format the usb drive using the tool on the Hypno, after this the usb was not recognised on my mac or my partners PC. I also noticed my saved patches/presets were not saved to the usb stick. I surmise that this was because the Hypno was struggling to recognise/read folders (and identify the contained files). I bought this 2nd hand and updated the firmware to 2.4.4 (the latest version). My version of the Rasberry PI has the two mini HDMI socket outputs and an SD card to flash firmware on (not sure what hardware version this is).

Hey video explorers, could be 2 diff issues I think, either the loaded videos are causing a crash (in which case please make sure you follow the relevant conversion/formatting directions docs.sleepycircuits.com & use SD formatter if the onboard tool is trippin’) or power is insufficient when the video sampling starts since doing that results in more power draw (where you may want to pick up an official pi4 PSU to make sure you are providing sufficient juicy juices)

Thanks Ron, to update: I have a new usb drive- I have added video without folders. No issues with this set up. I am now having presets and patches saved into a folder and Hypno is pulling presets using midi.
I’m not sure if my usb stick was failing, I will put some video in folders and try and navigate, to try and replicate the issue. Thanks again!
Chris

I hot swap video thumb drives with no problems, it takes a moment to load (but not restart)

I run two Hypnos with a mixer. I was running into issues crashing for a bit, but trimmed my video clip sizes down (10 seconds or less) and run without folders. Try to keep less than 80 clips on a drive, and haven’t had any more issues. I can now run a 5 hr set without crashing (knock on wood)
