New to Hypno - and seriously thinking of getting one.
I’ve been through a number of videos and lots of the forum but can’t quite see how to achieve what I am after.
I want to be able to create a video of my (pre-recorded music) with Hypno visuals, where the music is driving/synced to the visuals. I believe that during this process I could have hands on activity with the Hypno to add extra flavour as and when.
How would I go about doing this - it could be more than a single step?
Envelope Followers are your friend for audio-visualization with Hypno. So get something like the Doepfer A-119, similar, and pipe into the CV inputs of Hypno.
I did see that come up a few times. I do have a eurorack setup, but no envelope follower module. I shall add that to my list.
I was (am) struggling a bit with the whole setup- i.e. what’s connected to what to achieve the specific goal as above - run a music track, create visuals with some synchronisation. Combine both to produce a music video.
Hopefully, the diagram I’ve attached gets through…
Mostly, I believe it’s self explanatory, the laptop holds the music to be played, the ‘black box’ is the start of hardware to interface to Hypno. The envelope follower will go here.
So the music plays via the laptop, there’s interaction with Hypno, visuals are created and can be seen on capture card monitor, the results recorded via OBS on the desktop computer. Brand new to OBS btw.
Later, I will align the audio with the visuals - not sure how to do that yet?
If I’m way off the mark (can’t actually try things yet as Hypno ordered and hopefully on it’s way) and/or there are changes that should/could be made - please go ahead and shout - all help gratefully received!
One last thing - could someone advise on the spec of the capture device. I believe it should USB 2.0 - what else is important - thanks.
Usually, I use the Hypno for live visuals, with CV modifying the visuals in tempo. I originally bought it for this type of “get up and go” functionality, but I wanted to create a music video using the Hypno for visuals, so I did the following thing:
After the song was 100% complete and I uploaded it to streaming services (knowing that the “master” is out there and the final BPM is set) I then went to work on the music video. Before I began to work on the video, I already had loads of patches that I made on the Hypno.
I connected the Hypno via USB capture card to my computer and recorded the raw output in OBS.
Next, I connected all of my gear that modulates the Hypno (mainly an Akai Force and a TR-8S) and set it to the same tempo as the song.
Next, while recording the output of the Hypno, I then pressed “play” on my song and jammed along with it 4-5 times, generating 4-5 song-length video files.
Lastly, I took those raw video files and the original audio and combined them in Final Cut Pro, selecting my favorite parts, adding transitions, making sure all the beats lined up, etc.
The music video I created is almost 100% raw Hypno output. There are a few instances where I layered two Hypno output’s on top of each other (e.g. the “Astro Palace” title logo) and a few instances where I added some TV static/white noise to add a little bit of texture.
astropalace. That’s looks like a great workflow and yes the end result is what I am looking for.
In my diagram (earlier post) I went for a more elaborate Hypno to computer connection with passthrough - I don’t think I really need that - so I’ll go for a cheaper ‘standard’ USB capture card. Thanks very much for that great input.
Thank you so much! The one thing that I didn’t do this last time was to focus more on glitching out incoming video, but now I have access to a USB webcam so it’ll allow me to use that, so I am imagining my next video will likely focus more on the usage of that.
I’m working on some videos with a similar workflow.
I import the final audio track to my ipad and load it into AUM. Then a few instances of FAC Envolver use the audio to modulate some midi cc’s that are sent to the Hypno connected via a Widi Bud Pro. I also have an Akai Midi Mix controller hooked up the to the iPad (via powered usb hub and camera connection kit) that has been remapped for Hypno controls.
Output of the Hypno goes to a usb capture card on my Mac. I record the input in Quicktime movie player.
Audio output from the iPad is AirPlayed to the Mac. I use the audio part of the resulting video to sync up several takes in Final Cut Pro as a multi-cam clip. Then edit away.
Layering multiple takes from the Hypno makes for some really interesting effects.
